From The Garden Gate

It is such a beautiful day today I am so glad that  you came by to see the Fall Garden. We really enjoy all the winter greens and the bounty of the Fall Garden. Can you believe that we still have wonderful green heirloom tomatoes on the vine and some are still blooming.

We have beautiful Collard Greens. These same bushes have been producing since early last spring. My friend Amy at Simply Sugar and Gluten Free loves my Collard Greens. I shared my recipe with her and you can get that recipe at this link:Oven Braised Collard Greens

The Rainbow Chard is beautiful. We just love it in a great saute with a little extra virgin olive oil and lemon.

Our Turnip Green's are great. They are headed for the Thanksgiving table. We always have Turnip Green's on the table at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We like to cook them with a little salt pork, chicken broth, salt and pepper and they are so good, and of course you need a slice of hot corn bread to go with it.

When I went out to take the pictures today, I just stood for a moment and remembered going to the big garden with my grandmother when I was a little girl and we would pull the Turnips for the big dinner. I remember the earthy smell of the turnip and the  crisp bite of the green. I can still see my Grandmothers face as she would look down at me and say "now that's a good one" and she would just smile and now... I'm the one who is smiling...
I am so glad that you could stop by and spend some time with me today in the garden. I hope to see you again real soon.
Peace and Joy

  1. Very jealous of all your fall produce. I wake up everymorning to see a hard frost on the ground so nothing is growing here in Indiana this time of year.

  2. I love all your veggies. The tomatoes are fabulous! My red tomato only produced one single fruit and then the plant died! Your turnips are really nice, I would smile too, a big happy smile, if these veggies are in my garden!

  3. Miz Helen, I am so jealous of your garden:) I had a great one in Ohio, but I have to wait for another one in California. Your chard and collards look great (the chard in my garden just kept on producing - the more I snipped, the more it grew!)
I have to say that I have never had a turnip in my life (shame, I know - I had black radishes, though).
This year I decided to learn how to cook turnips and kohlrabi. I hate to miss out on deliciousness!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving kind words:)

  5. These are some tantalizing pictures coming out of your garden. We have some late Autumn lettuce growing right now, but that is about it. I am so looking forward to next years growing season!

  7. Can't believe you still have tomatoes!! Mine can't tolerate the cold (California cold) by this time. Are yours late season ones?

  9. I'm a little (a lot...) jealous because not only did I not take the time to plant a fall garden I didn't water what we had. I sent Joe out once but my mind was focused elsewhere. Such is life, huh?

Thanks for linking to my collard green recipe, which of course links back here because I learned how to cook them from you.

    Much love!
    Amy
