To answer your question, I don't know what I would do, but I can tell you what I did. Unfortunately there is not a cookie cutter solution for this problem as each child is different. My children grew up with charts and list. We always had rewards for positive behavior and consequences for negative behavior. We did always discuss the situation and try to find out as you did to find the reality of what happened. I would ask my children to write about what happened and how they could change the choice they made and then we would discuss how they could make different choices in the future. I found that they needed checklist just like I do, so often times they would have a checklist of things to remember at school, or at home. I found this to be very helpful. I know that most of my children still use that system today and have passed it along to their own children. I am always happy to be able to share my experience with those of you in the trenches.
