Food Bloggers Against Hunger

What Would You Do If You Were Hungry?
Did you know that 50.1 million Americans struggle to put food on the table?  What would you do if you were one of these people, or maybe you are one of these people.

I am joining The Giving Table and over 200 other bloggers today to bring a new awareness to hunger in America.  These blog post are in response to the documentary A Place At The Table.

I have been a volunteer at a local food bank for the past few years so I see the face of hunger every time I am at the food bank.  We serve a three county rural area and in the past three years the number of people that we serve is three times greater than it was three years ago. The population of these counties has not increased but rather in one case has decreased and yet the need has increased.  Our food bank is an emergency food bank, that is supported by 9 churches in our area.  If a family has an emergency they can come to us and get enough food for each person in the family for 1 week and they are limited to that request only once a month.  Last month we served over 800 families.

I interviewed a young single mother who receives Texas WIC Women Infants Children, this program provides approved foods and nutritional education to pregnant women, new mothers and young children. She also receives $526.00 a month for her and her two children from the SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. I asked her if she had ever been hungry, she said "yes,  but I try to make sure that my children never go to bed hungry". I asked her what she would do if the funds that she now receives from these two programs stopped or were reduced, she said, "I really don't know, because we are barely making it now".  I gave her the recipe for the Southwest Chalupa recipe and the ingredients to make the recipe and asked her to let me know how her family liked it.  She said they just loved the recipe and that they got two meal's from the recipe. I have mentored this young women for awhile now and she tells me that without what she has learned about meal planning, their meals would not be as good as they are. She said because she has learned to plan her food, the money buys more food.

For Great Meal Plan and Menu Ideas

I hope that all of you will want to join our challenge and help our fellow Americans continue to receive the help they need to feed their families. Thank you for your time and kind attention to this issue and I pray that you never know what it is like to be hungry.
Peace and Joy
