How To Make Unstuffed Cabbage Casserole Recipe
Spoon the cooked rice on the bottom layer, then smooth the layer.
Salt and Pepper the layer after it is smoothed.
In a large skillet brown the hamburger with the onions and garlic.

Place the fresh chopped cabbage into the skillet. Sauté the cabbage until just tender.
Stir in the seasons and mix well.

Pour the delicious sauce on top of the cabbage layer.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven to a cooling rack and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Unstuffed Cabbage Casserole
A great casserole for a covered dish supper or a casual family meal. The same flavors & ingredients as Stuffed Cabbage.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter, divided
- 3 cups white rice, cooked
- 2 pounds ground chuck, browned
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 cups, fresh cabbage, sliced and chopped
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 (24 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
- Salt and Pepper each layer, to taste
Instructions
- With 1 tablespoon butter, generously butter a 9 X 13 baking dish, then set aside.
- Place the cooked rice in the bottom of the baking dish. Smooth the layer and salt and pepper to taste.
- In large hot skillet, brown the hamburger, onions and garlic. Spoon the hamburger mixture on top of the rice layer in the baking dish. Salt and Pepper the hamburger layer to taste. Do not wash the skillet just set it aside.
- In the same hamburger skillet melt 2 tablespoons butter. Place the chopped cabbage into the hot skillet with the melted butter. Stir the cabbage until it begins to wilt. Add the thyme, and parsley to the cabbage and mix well. Salt and pepper the cabbage to taste.
- In a mixing pitcher, whisk together, the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, vinegar, and brown sugar. Pour the tomato mixture on top of the cabbage layer of the casserole.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes until heated through. Remove the baked casserole from the oven to a cooling rack. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
