Fall and Winter Garden

We planted our fall and winter garden in late September. We had a very dry summer, but we did start to get some rain in mid September and decided to go ahead and plant. We had plants growing so it was a matter of getting them in the ground. We had already worked and fertilized our ground so it was all ready to go. We  are looking at a great winter garden now so we are very happy we went ahead and planted.

What To Plant For A Fall and Winter Garden
Fall and Winter Garden: 2023 at Miz Helen's Country Cottage
We have loaded the little wagon with plants from the green house. We had removed all of the summer vegetables that were harvested, tilled the ground and put some new fertilizer on the ground.

We transplanted our 2 Lemon Trees that are
2 years old from their growing can into the ground.

Now it is mid November and look at the lemon tree, we actually have a couple of lemons that will be ready for harvest soon!

Mid November I have already harvested some of the kale and sage. We had our first freeze of the season in October, and they weathered well!

I planted the Veggie Pod in September at the same time we planted in the garden squares.
We planted different kinds of
lettuce, peppers, basil, rosemary, and chives.

This raised Herb Garden is located on the back side of the flagstone patio and only a few steps from my kitchen door. I just dart out the kitchen door and clip the fresh herbs for my recipes. I have oregano, Italian and curly parsley, thyme and chives.

The Wild Flower Bed was cleaned out and the ground worked. We have had one light freeze and
here we are in mid November the yellow and
red rose bush are both blooming.

These planters are sitting just outside the screen porch which has been covered on the inside for the winter. When the freeze came we placed all of the plants on the inside of the screen porch, but today the mint tub, beautiful elephant ear and asparagus fern, hydrangea and ivy pot, plus the beautiful begonia pot are enjoying some sunshine.

Our Chinese Pistachio has beautiful feather fall leaves.  You may notice the two stumps behind the tree, that were two of the magnolia trees that we lost this summer in the drought. And the old oak tree that is coming down in the pasture.

All of the plants and flowers look great here in mid November, after a light freeze. The tall Ginger Plant in the center of the bed will be harvested soon and we will have amazing fresh ginger.
