November is truly a food lovers season. We love looking in our food and recipe basket for the seasonal foods and recipes of November. Thanksgiving is our big holiday this month and a food lovers holiday!  We see pumpkins just about everywhere we go, they are in the markets, pumpkin patches, and front porches. I use them for decoration, but mostly love them in a delicious recipe on my table. Sweet Potatoes are one of the farmers crops here in our area and we see Sweet Potatoes in the farm stands, back of pick up trucks, and in our very own gardens.   What's In Season and How Can I Use It? That is the question that we address in our Food and Recipe Basket. Fall garden production is hardy here because we still have temperatures that allow production to continue. Although we still have some of our summer production available, some of the all time favorite fall products are ready to harvest in the month of October.  The apples, collards, and dried pinto beans have been abundant.   Welcome to the September Food & Recipe Basket. We bring the seasonal garden products and recipes to one basket. A basket full of ideas to enjoy a new season. We had heavy rains here this year and our harvest is low. We are grateful to live in an area where we have great Farmers Markets that bring us the harvest from other area's of the country.

  We are so excited to welcome you to our August Food and Recipe Basket. A true Garden to Table publication. August in Texas is extreme heat most of the time. The heat means a struggle to keep the garden alive to have any kind of harvest. We do have some plants that will sustain the Texas heat and they are the winners every year. This is our big canning season, so we get those big canners out of storage and fill them up for just one more year.

Many of the foods that we have had in our basket for the past two months are still producing and can be found at many of the farmers markets.  Some of the recipes that I will share with you this month have been passed down in our family for generations, I hope you enjoy them.

  It is my pleasure to present our June Food and Recipe Basket. Our gardens and Farmers Markets are just busting with fresh goodness to bring to our kitchens and tables to enjoy.

  May is such busy month with spring in full swing, wild flowers blooming, garden vegetables being harvested and planted. We have a special basket full of fun celebrations where we will find some really great fresh food. The seasonal foods that we will be talking about this month are currently  harvested in our area. Most of the products can be found in Farmers Markets across the area. Our recipes have been handed down though the generations of my family and are linked on this blog.

  Spring is here and we are so ready for a season change. It is great to see all the Spring vegetables coming on in our garden and at the Farmers Market. We have a brand new Farmers Market opening in one of our villages on March 1 and I can hardly wait to see what all they will bring to sale. I am a seasonal cook and I look forward to turning the calendar to spring fruits and vegetables.

We have two special events this month. First we have the Super Bowl where we will be having some amazing snacks. Second we can't forget a very special Valentine Day!

Welcome to September with some of the garden harvest winding down for this season.  We have several traditional end of season recipes that we will be sharing with you. Some of the produce that we enjoyed in early June and July has given in to the heat and now we are have only the hardy producers to harvest. We are so blessed to live in an area that has some of the best farmers markets that keep us supplied with most garden vegetables the year round.

Some of these crops have been growing for several months. We planted some our winter crops earlier this month. I am excited for the fall fruits and vegetables with their wonderful warm and cozy flavors.

What's In Season and How Do I Use It September is a great month for fresh foods and the season invites us to turn to more fall like recipes. If the temperatures are normal with the normal amount of rain, our area will produce a full line up of the fruits and vegetables. What I really look at in September are the foods that will not be producing that much longer and I turn to the preserving and canning of those predominantly spring and summer products. 

  What's In Season and How Do I Use It? August in Texas is hot and sometimes dry. Often times our gardens really suffer from the heat, but there are some vegetables that continue to produce during this time. This year we have experienced very high temperatures in the 3 digits for over a month. The gardens are not doing very well, but the farmers markets are packed out with wonderful selections of fruits and vegetables. We are still getting some of the all time summer producers, like tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons. We do have some great vegetables that are in season for the month of August.

  What is in season now and how can I use it? That is the question that started our Food and Recipe Basket. This month we are looking at some wonderful April fruits and vegetables that are in some of our gardens and also in the markets. I love looking forward to all the fresh fruits and vegetables that we will be having in the spring and summer months.
